Tennessee Military Bases - The military base in Tennessee is what you think. Of course there are Air Force bases as well as Navy bases. But did you know that there are two huge arms factories in the Volunteer State? In total, the DoD owns and operates eight facilities in the state. Some are active, while others serve in additional capacities.

As you might expect, there are no naval bases in Tennessee. Speaking of Marines, so some members of the Marine Corps are and others are not. Ironically, the Navy has a base here. Tennessee Military Bases

Located in Tullahoma, Arnold AFB began when America entered World War II. It is home to the Arnold Engineering Development Complex (AEDC). The base was active until 2009. Today it is a space and aerodynamics test facility. AEDC also tests rocks and wind tunnels here. The two sections are connected by a railway and include 465 buildings.

Don't let the name fool you. Holston is not governed by the Court. Instead, it is operated by BAE Systems. BAE won the Army contract in 1999 and it is valid for 25 years. That means change could be coming to Holston soon. Holston has been around since World War II, and its original mission was to create explosives. Today, it still produces almost all of the explosives used by DoD and our allies.

McGee Tyson Air National Guard Base in Knoxville, Tennessee is a long-standing military base. Today it has four active units. The combat squadron of the Aerospace Defense Command is also located here. At first, McGee provided security for the Atomic Energy Commission. It is a federal agency that America created after World War II to take care of atomic energy. After President Truman signed the McMahon Atomic Energy Act in 1946, control of nuclear power shifted from the military to civilian hands. However, by 1974, the AEC was abolished. Like Holston, Milan Ordnance Plant and its subsidiary Wolf Creek Ordnance Plant were almost always military bases in Tennessee. Milan created ammunition for small and large arms. Boosters and protectors are also designed here. However, unlike Holston, Milan is the closest Army base to Tennessee. However, his task was clear - to make ammunition.

Major U.s. Military Bases And Installations

The Navy has a military base in Tennessee near Millington. It is located north of Memphis and has a population of approximately 7,500. The Army National Guard Barracks in Cookeville, Tennessee is a storage and transit facility for both troops and supplies. The Tennessee Army National Guard maintains this installation. The army maintains weapons, vehicles and supplies.

Berry Field is a support wing of the DoD. This means that this Nashville, Tennessee military base will help support the military during the war. It has been around since before World War II, making it one of the oldest bases in the state. The MQ-9 Reaper squadron also calls Berry Field home. This is an unmanned aerial support team.

Memphis Air National Guard Base traces its roots back to 1961. Today it is a residential terminal for air transport. However, the 164th Fighter Group is also here. Primarily, the 164th works to keep training operations seamless as it is often used as a training facility for the DoD.

As the United States entered World War II, Arnold Air Force Base was born. During this period and after the war, soldiers and civilians moved in and began to grow Tullooma, TN, the city where it is located. Our military needs ammunition, and one of its suppliers is located in Kingsport, Tennessee. The Holston Ordnance Plant is operated by Ordnance Systems Inc. BAE Systems, which won the Army contract. The contract was signed for 25 years and started in 1999. Service & Sacrifice: Cold War Mission Shaped Tennessee Air Base

The Milan Ammunition Plant is located west of Milan, Tennessee and 26.5 miles north of Jackson. The facility covers 22,357 acres and is bounded on the east and west by Spring Creek Road and State Highway 465, respectively. The northern boundary is defined by the Rutherford Fork Obion River and the southern boundary by Hope Hill Cemetery and Brewer Hill. The climate around the Milan Ordnance Factory is defined as humid subtropical, meaning it has mild winters and hot humid summers.

Built in 1942, the Milan Ordnance Plant consists of two separate facilities, the Milan Ordnance Depot and the Wolf Creek Ordnance Plant. Both facilities serve different roles for the Department of the Army and together cover 28,000 acres. Proctor & Gamble owns the Wolf Creek Ordinance Plant, which processes ammonium nitrate, produces large and small caliber ammunition, ammunition and ammunition depots, and manufactures protectors and boosters for heavy armor weapons.
